Composer Adam Rudolph returns with another series of Go: Organic Orchestra to Shapeshifter. In concert he will conduct between 20 – 35 musicians in a spontaneous way, using a newly created score of music/letter grids, language themes, tone rows, traditional and synthetic scales, diadic and intervalic harmonies, The compositions will also utilize Rudolph’s rhythm concept of “Cyclic Verticalism” to generate form and weave what he calls an “audio syncretic music fabric”. The music is “organic” in the sense that the compositions and conducting exist as an inspiration and context for the musicians to express themselves by using their instruments as an amplifier for their inner voice.

Pavone’s recent works for solo viola and voice stem from years of concentrated long tone practice and an interest in repetition, song form, and sympathetic vibration. She combines her long tone rituals with delay, understated melodies and sparse lyrical content while continuously experimenting with new forms.

This festival explores music from around the world befitting the stunning acoustics of the magnificent, 10-story glass-vaulted Winter Garden. Each night pairs two groups from different traditions: opening night the stage is shared by two superb singer-songwriters France’s Mélanie Pain (of Nouvelle Vague (official)) with Haitian-Canadian chanteuse Mélissa Laveaux; night two brings one of the world’s greatest living artists Jivan Gasparyan from Armenia for his final New York performance together with the distinctly creative Iranian artist Kayhan Kalhor. Medeski, Martin & Wood drummer Billy Martin has partnered with the Master Musicians of Jajouka and a number of notable western musicians to produce The Road to Jajouka, A benefit album with an all star international line up of some of the best cutting edge musicians of over the last 3 decades.
The Rif Mountains of Morocco hosts a small collection of tribal musicians dubbed the Master Musicians of Jajouka by western artists, but despite their obscurity, this small group has influenced popular musicians from the Rolling Stones to Ornnette Coleman. The sufi trance music they perform stretches from more than 1,000-year-old tradition, and is endangered with some of the musicians having died off and younger generations of Moroccans moving away from their mountainous home.
The Road to Jajouka live performance features the Master Musicians of Jajouka, led by Bachir Attar, along with MMW drummer Billy Martin, guitarist Marc Ribot, Dj Logic and Shahzad Ismaily on Bass.
Proceeds from the record’s sales will be used to preserve the century-old community and musical culture of the Master Musicians of Jajouka.
