Mike Pride, born and raised in Southern Maine, but based out of New York City since 2000, Mike Pride currently leads modern-jazz quartet From Bacteria To Boys, the 7-drummer installation-band Drummer’s Corpse, and the piano trio I Hate Work. He records for AUM Fidelity. Pride is renowned for his ability to excel in a wide range of genres and ensembles. He has worked with everyone from improvised music icon Anthony Braxton to punk legends Millions Of Dead Cops, toured extensively on four continents and appeared on more than 85 recordings.

The Moon is Adam Caine (guitar) and Federico Ughi (drums), a Brooklyn-based internationally-touring ensemble that has released two CDs of experimental improvised music that bridges the gap between jazz, avant-garde, and heavy rock. The Moon has played 5 United States tours, 4 as a duo and 1 with legendary downtown improvising multi-instrumentalist Daniel Carter. The Moon made a trip to Morocco in 2014 to play with Dar Gnawa Du Tangier. The Moon’s 2014 CD, ‘Good and Evil’ (577 Records) received rave reviews from New York City Jazz Record, All About Jazz, Freejazzblog.org, Downtown Music Gallery and other publications and blogs.

Kevin Bud Jones is joined this evening in a trio comprised of drummer/saxophonist, Brendan Burke (Guarsh-duo w/ Jason Candler) and saxophonist, Jason Candler (Gary Lucas’ Gods and Monsters and Hungry March Band) which we know will have its own special blend of fireworks and that we look forward to experiencing very much.
Kevin Bud Jones played his first NYC gigs in 1981 as guitarist in the DIY dance band Dog Eat Dog. Sharing bills with Sonic Youth, Swans, Three Teens Kill Four and other notables of the time, DED was requested by DNA to open their farewell show at CBGB’s in 1982. Post Dog Eat Dog Kevin performed at the White Columns Speed Trials in the short lived band Big Day while working in his home studio with various artists producing music for film and performance. The last four years Kevin Bud Jones has been working with the trio Airport Seven while continuing to release home recordings of his own compositions The past year finds Kevin working with Chris Cochrane in duet as well as with the band Collapsible Shoulder. As the result of an injury in February Kevin had to put down his guitar and has taken up analog synthesis, samples and electronics as his current instrument.
On The Way Out is a monthly series on the 4th Tuesday of each month at Freddys since 2003. It highlights unorthodox performances by some of New York’s hardworking individualistic artists from the jazz, new music, noise, and other experimental scenes.

Aashish Khan is considered among the top handful of India’s greatest living Sarodists. He descends from one of the greatest music lineages known to India; His lat grandfather was the great Ustad Allauddin Khan, his late father was the great Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and his Aunt is the renowned Smt. Annapurna Devi. From these great maestros, Utad Aashish Khan received his training in the maihar style of Sarode since the age of 5. His excellence of playing and vast knowledge are rivaled by very few musicians.

Born and raised in Paris, France, bassist/composer Louis de Mieulle started his musical education at 7, playing the cello. After switching to the bass guitar, he eventually graduated from the National Conservatory of Paris (classical writing) and the American School (jazz), and then moved to Boston to attend the Berklee College of Music, from which he graduated in two years. In France he formed a groundbreaking jazz-groove band, SOUNDCHASER, but also participated in more mainstream projects – from classic rock to hip-hop. In 2006, he won a composition contest with the comic opera “Tres Para Una”, co-written with Augustin d’Assignies and Edward Greaves. Louis has also been teaching bass and music theory for years, both privately and in school context .

Quickly Quietly formed in 2011, at the end of the year they released their debut Seven EP. The band first played together in prospect-lefferts garden and continued grinding out improv sessions into a fresh sound from analog drum machines, deep guitar and heavy rhythms. The new sound, exemplified by the track “Nothing But Air,” is very electric and very live. Lautaro on drums and samples, Paul on bass and keys, Aaron on guitar and vox. Each member serves double duty to the music creating a eclectic sound and a wide palate, uncharacteristic of a rock trio. If there was an ethos to the band it would be song, texture, rhythm, electrified. Quickly Quietly are: Aaron Hyzen (guitar,vocals/leader), Paul Sikivie (bass & synths), Lautaro Burgos (SoSaLa, drums ), Greg Zweiben (SoSaLa, synths & percussion)- This band plays edgy indie-esque rock.

Afro-Brazilian percussion in a big band format, Letieres Leite & Orkestra Rumpilezz combine traditional African-based rhythms with sophisticated jazz harmonies. Making its U.S. debut at Lincoln Center Out of Doors, the group will collaborate with critically acclaimed pianist Arturo O’Farrill and celebrated trumpeter Steven Bernstein, who are presenting original compositions to be arranged in the Rumpilezz style.
Cyro Baptista reveals another imaginative layer of Afro-Brazilian jazz fusion by integrating instruments he designs himself into his performances. His mastery of Brazilian percussion and jazz experimentation produces an utterly unique, unapologetic sound.
Forró in the Dark, a collective of New York-based Brazilian expats, presents a new take on the rural party music of Brazil’s northeastern states: forró. The Philadelphia Inquirer raves, “It’s polyrhythmic street-party music with a downtown edge.”

8. ¡Presente! The Young Lords in New York

Loisaida Inc will focus on the Young Lords’ founding – a radical social activist group founded by Puerto Rican youth in the 1960s that demanded reform in health care, education, housing, employment, and policing – and impact in the Lower East Side – displaying rarely seen photographs, posters, and audio and video recordings of live performances. The exhibit begins with the announcement of the founding of the New York Chapter of the Young Lords at Tompkins Square Park on Saturday, July 26, 1969.
The exhibition will feature lesser-known perspectives of the Young Lords legacy within the Lower East Side, and their cultural impact upon New York’s cultural scenes. Some highlights include the organizing efforts of the Gay and Lesbian Caucus, the transgender activism of Sylvia Rivera, and innovative “artivism” generated by Eddie Figueroa, the founder of the New Rican Village, an influential multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary art space once located at 101 Avenue A.
The exhibition is co-curated by Libertad Guerra and Wilson Valentín-Escobar and features many un-published photographs by Máximo Colón and Hiram Maristany, as well as poster art by Sandra Maria Esteves, and rare live video and audio recordings of some of the leading salsa and Latin jazz musicians, plus an art installation commissioned specifically for this exhibition by contemporary artist Adrian “Viajero”Román.
The overall collection of materials depict the critical role that YL members played in the environment that lead to Loisaida becoming a safe refuge for a community struggling for respect, belonging, political power, and public legitimacy.

Live-wired Vintage Trouble shoots straight from the hip and blows apart modern soul, rock, and R&B. Yahoo Music says, “Imagine James Brown singing lead for Led Zeppelin, and you’ll get an idea of Vintage Trouble’s muscular in-the-pocket sound.”
LION BABE singer-songwriter and performance artist Jillian Hervey and instrumentalist and producer Lucas Goodman—draws on an eclectic mix of influences for their sonic and stunning visuals, which mirror the rich melting pot of New York cultures. Citing A Tribe Called Quest and Sergeant Pepper–era Beatles as early influences, the duo identifies with a generation brought up on the internet, with references from film and music of all genres and eras just a click away.
The Skins are an infectious Brooklyn-based band whose ages range from 15-21. They play like old pros, offering a soulful interpretation of rock that today’s audiences crave, while proving age doesn’t matter.
The Triptych, a documentary series highlighting outspoken visual artists of our time, profiles the culturally resonant voice of Kenyan-born sculptor and artist Wangechi Mutu. Based in Brooklyn, Mutu’s acclaimed Afrofuturist works explore feminism, globalization, and the post-imperialist age.

Music Meditation is a guided meditation wherein suggested imagery is replaced by musical form. Thesemusical forms are chosen to invoke specific emotional, visceral, and psychic effects, and form the template for musical improvisation that guides the seeker through many different instructive and often overlooked psychic / spiritual realms. It is quite a powerful and unique experience.
Dawoud Kringle is a multi instrumentalist, composer, improviser, and band leader of the ensembles Renegade Sufi and God’s Unruly Friends. His experiments with applying jazz technique and electronics to the traditional Indian and eastern music is unprecedented. He has performed in the US and Europe, appeared on many recordings, has composed for film, theater, and dance performances, and has enjoyed radio airplay in the US, Europe, Russia, and Indonesia. Dawoud also conducts music meditation sessions, a process he invented wherein he guides group meditation using musical form and sound as a template for imagery. His teaching credits include offering private instruction since 1980, the Bronx School of Music and Art, and the Harlem School of the Arts, and is an accomplished writer / novelist.
