Sex Mob began merely as a setting to feature the slide trumpet of leader Steven Bernstein, but has grown into a band with a much larger mission: to put the fun back in jazz music. After assembling the band (Bernstein, slide trumpet; Briggan Krauss, alto sax; Tony Scherr, bass; Kenny Wollesen, drums), Sex Mob began a residency at the Knitting Factory, playing predominantly originals written by Bernstein. During a special evening of film music, the crowd went crazy for the “James Bond Theme,” and Bernstein realized that the audience was much more attuned to their playing when they recognized the tune. The band started to expand their songbook, but not to the same old, tired jazz standards. Songs by Prince, the Grateful Dead, the Rolling Stones, and even the “Macarena” could find their way into a Sex Mob set, the only rule being that the song had to have such a strong melody that it could withstand serious deconstruction. Bernstein said in Jazz Asylum, “I realize that’s what jazz musicians have always done. That’s how Lester Young got popular; it’s how Charlie Parker got popular; it’s how Miles Davis got popular; that’s how John Coltrane got popular. They played the songs that everyone knew and because they could recognize the song, then that invited them into their style.”

Salif Keita’s career as a musician will always be colored by the fact that he is a member of the Royal Family of Mali. In 1970 he was invited to play in Rail Band, an orchestra supported in part by public money that played in the restaurant of the railway hotel in Bamako. In Rail Band he came into contact with Kante Manfila who had many of the same ideas as Keita concerning the blending of disparate styles. After three years Keita and Manfila moved on to the (then) second most prolific group in Mali, Les Ambassadeurs, that had a more modern repertoire. The group’s popularity soared and in 1978 Salif Keita was created “Minister for Music and Culture” by the president of neighboring Guinea. In gratitude, Salif Keita composed the song ‘Mandjou’, which was an enormous success. Keita and Manfila continued to develop their fusion music and create hypnotic sounds, one after the other, but in the 1980s Keita dissolved Les Ambassadeurs and set out on his solo career. Since then his meaningful influence has cropped up in many areas – from western pop and rock to Pink Floyd, among others.

Digital artist and animator, Marjan Moghaddam will be showing her latest project, David & Goliath Still Can’t Fight, a spectacular High Definition CG animation installation, as part of the #occupycommonground exhibition of contemporary art at Saint Paul The Apostle church in Manhattan. Conceived as a time-based, digital painting, this 14 minute animation with text, explores the myth of David and Goliath as a virus of civilization. The visual and textual narrative blends the biblical myth with Computer and media theory, philosophy, evolution, post humanism, political science, contemporary digital culture, metaphysics and shamanism. The main characters are designed in Ms. Moghaddam’s signature Digital Cubist style which is suggestive of contemporary film and video game style digital figuration, they engage in an epic battle amidst explosions of paint and special effects in a mesmerizing slow motion mock battle. The text interacts with the visuals, exploring the power dynamics of revolutions while citing Marx and Picketty, and pondering whether we’re stuck, subverting the myth, or transcending it.
Ms. Moghadam is an Iranian born, American artist who works primarily with computer-based technologies; she lives and works in Brooklyn. Her pioneering and award-winning works have been exhibited widely, funded by organizations such as Brooklyn Arts Council/NY Department of Cultural Affairs and the Rockefeller Fund. Her works have additionally been exhibited in international festivals and curated programs of the Armory Show and Art Basel Miami. She was selected for the prestigious Siggraph Computer Animation Festival and Computer Art Gallery a total of 5 times, including the “Siggraph 30 Years of Computer Art Gallery”. She is on the cover of the September issue of ArticulatiAction Art Review magazine this month.

The autumn equinox is a powerful planetary alignment that signifies the beginning of fall, the balance of night and day and the beginning of the sign of Libra. Dream Seed is a two-hour sound bath hosted by members of Golden Drum and Didge Project. Shamanic chanting, mantras, overtone singing, Native American songs, indigenous music, didgeridoos, crystal singing bowls, bells, gongs, harmoniums, tuning forks and other overtone-emitting instruments are used to create an environment conducive to deep relaxation and inward investigation. Participants are led through guided meditations and sound healing practices designed to harmonize body, mind and spirit.
