The first ever musical project to tell the stories of New York City’s immigrant children. A public school using compelling ballads and funky beats as a creative way of raising money during the current funding crunch. Students, parents, and staff members part of the arts-based East Village Community School in the heart of New York’s historically global neighborhoods have come together to produce an album uniting Iraqis and Tibetans, immigrants by choice and refugees, and deep historical roots on Songs from the East Village (releases September 20th, 2010).
Head-started by local Irish singer Susan McKeown, Songs from the East Village integrates an extraordinary group of talented artists from the area who are also parents of students at the school, including Puerto Rican Salsa pianist Ray Santiago, bassist and Black rock icon Melvin Gibbs, and actress Sharita Choudhury.

After tackling American maverick composer Charles Ives and being rewarded with a Grammy nomination for it, vocalist Theo Bleckmann now takes on the mysterious songbook of British pop recluse Kate Bush. This project goes beyond merely re-creating Kate’s Bush music but taking it to even further realms of sound and interpretation. Joining him in this venture will be long-time collaborator percussionist John Hollenbeck, bassist Skuli Sverrisson and keyboardist Henry Hey and special guest, mult-instrumentalist Caleb Burhans on viola, guitar and back-up vocals.

Two electrifying improvisational duo collaborations from Moscow and New York City. The 22nd season of the Interpretations series begins with two new collaborative endeavors. Innovative virtuosos, flutist Robert Dick and baritone Thomas Buckner celebrate the release of their new CD “Flutes and Voices”. Moscow-based improvisers Alexei Borisov and Olga Nosova will bring their highly idiosyncratic music to the US, touching on elements of noise, sound art, and spoken word, using electronics, guitar, and percussion.

Dawn of Midi is Indian contrabassist Aakaash Israni, Moroccan pianist Amino Belyamani and Pakistani percussionist Qasim Naqvi. Based in New York and Paris, the group’s debut record ‘First’ (Accretions) has garnered a startling amount of critical acclaim for an album of completely improvised music. Dawn of Midi’s sound-world draws from a variety of musical idioms: from minimalism, to musique concrète through romanticism, the leaderless trio breathes rigor, lyricism, and silence. Dawn of Midi’s sound-world is one of effortless juxtaposition; from the harmonic language of Debussy to the clammer and rattle of extended techniques evoking Cage’s piano preparations. In the global art music setting, one can sense a paradigm shift that veers towards an appreciation of timbre, color, and the silences that frame a musical offering. This new sensibility is immediately recognizable within DoM’s language.

In his 5-star review, Stef Gijssels of the widely popular FREE JAZZ blog described ““It is hard to describe, but you get more musical ideas and influences in one album here, than in a dozen other, combined to organically forge a musical universe that is coherent, full of drama and cinematic evolution and story-telling. It is not about the expression of the individual supported by fellow musicians, although you get that too, but a real collective and powerful sound sculpture. It is quite ambitious in its concept, but the end result is stunning. Don’t miss it.”
VISION the latest multimedia solo percussion and digital percussion concert of Andrea Centazzo is an anthology from his solo works. After an intense season of improvised music (1972-83) in 1984 Andrea made is debut as filmmaker with Tiare, a videofilm journey to his childhood. The video won all the video festival around the word and launched a new chapter in Andrea Artistic adventure. After may videos and soundtrack, Andrea decided to blend all his artistic experiences in a new medium, the Multimedia solo concert. Using a percussion keyboard and acoustic percussion, Andrea integrate the images that he shoot and edit with his compositions in a mix of endless possibilities. Still improvising is great part of this new expressive process, creating every time a different setting for the images projected on the back or the vast array of instruments..

Merzbow is a noise project created in Tokyo, Japan in 1979 under the direction of noise technician Masami Akita. Since 1979, he has formed two record labels and has contributed releases to numerous independent record labels. As well as being a prolific artist, Akita has written books on avant-garde art, postmodern culture, and Animal Rights.
