A former student of William Winant, Fred Frith, Pauline Oliveros, and Alvin Currin, Ches Smith has proven to be one of the most versatile drummers working in experimental music today. Navigating seamlessly from jazz to metal to punk to art-rock to electronic music to Haitian voodoo drumming, over the years he has worked with Secret Chiefs 3, Trevor Dunn, Xiu Xiu, John Zorn, John Tchicai, Marc Ribot, Fred Frith, Mr. Bungle, Terry Riley, and many others. Tonight Smith presents his exciting new ensemble Ches Smith & These Arches, featuring Tony Malaby, Mary Halvorson, and Andrea Parkins.

Baritone Thomas Buckner performs works by Peter Garland and Petr Kotik for voice and percussion, featuring percussionist William Winant and members of the Orchestra of the SEM Ensemble conducted by Kotik, works for voice and piano by Michael Byron and Roscoe Mitchell, featuring pianist Joseph Kubera, and a work by Fred Ho for baritone voice and baritone saxophone featuring Ho on baritone saxophone.

An eclectic evening of music featuring a guitar duo with filmmaker/composer Sarah Lipstate (Noveller) and Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), ethereal drone artist Kyle Bobby Dunn whose work “sheds light on meaning, consequence and condition through sonic reveries and ‘patience incarnate'”, and Seaven Teares – a new experimental folk project from Charlie Looker (Extra Life).

“aRAUz, featuring Alicia Rau, will arouse the creative senses of young audiences through hands-on percussion, body movement, and call and response. Miss Rau’s young audience will join in singing and counting in English, French, and Wolof (West African language), as well as `explore cadence-based grooves based on traditional African chants. Utilizing both familiar American-based tunes and deep-rooted African traditions, children will take a trip through the world of musical expression.”
