1. Jeremy Wilms’ “DIAMOND PEOPLE” CD Release Party

Whether playing alongside jazz legend Chico Hamilton or indie rockers TV on the Radio, collaborating with members of Sonic Youth or with Brazilian singer Bebel Gilberto, laying down grooves on Broadway stages or in Brooklyn Afrobeat band Antibalas, multi- instrumentalist Jeremy Wilms has enjoyed a fruitful career playing other people’s music. Now, with Diamond People, Wilms finally seizes the opportunity to reveal his own individual sound with a wide-ranging and vibrant set of original music.

Wilms is a founding member of the bands Chin Chin and Big Mono and currently leads the prog rock band NOMOTO. He is also a gifted singer/songwriter, with an album in that vein in the works for 2014. Wilms has composed music for several soundtrack recordings, including the Sundance Channel series Iconoclasts, the CNN documentary Far From Home, and PBS’ online educational series Math Club.

Karan Casey has been critically acclaimed from Japan to America as one of Ireland’s greatest singers. The Wall Street Journal has described her as one of the true glories of Irish music today. One of the most influential voices in contemporary Irish music, Karan Casey is a natural innovator. More than a decade ago American audiences were introduced to her as vocalist for the Irish “supergroup” Solas. Following their groundbreaking early releases, Casey struck out on her own. She now has 4 solo releases to her credit and multiple collaborations (including the Grammy-winning “Celtic Solstice” with Paul Winter & Friends and Tim O’Brien’s “Two Journeys.”

1. Composer’s workshop series @ Pianos UPSTAIRS lounge

A unique new workshop that spotlights composers whose work features improvisation as a compositional tool. Rocco John Iacovone‘s work is featured Nov 11, this Monday. His wife Denise will be doing an improvised painting of the music.

Each session will be multi-faceted, and focuses on improvisation within some compositional structure. The audience can watch an open rehearsal as the composer speaks to the ensemble about the work, the musical philosophy, and the approach to the composition. This is an insider’s look at what goes on in a rehearsal, and how composer’s and musicians work. After the hour rehearsal, there will be a performance of the new piece.

1. Wieland Möller

Wieland Möller is a drummer, sound artist and performer in the field of jazz, improvised music and dance. Environmental strains and the evolutionary process of the pieces of music stimulated by them are especially important for his work.

Wieland works as a drummer with international bands of different stylistics, e.g. the jazz trio ATOS and his own trio which recently released the debut album Akvariet. He has been a guest at the Buenos Aires Jazz Festival, Jazz International Rotterdam and North Sea Jazz Festival, among others, and has toured the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Argentina and Island. Being a composer and performing musician, Wieland Möller has been involved in dance theater projects e.g. the Reykjavik Dance Festival, Danceworks Rotterdam and Perform(d)ance Stralsund and has worked together with the dancer Konrad Szymanski. What does fascinate him when taking part in dance projects is to be able to make sounds visually real and motion audible.
