THE GOETHE – INSTITUT NEW YORK PRESENTS: DANCING WITH THE BERLIN WALL

Nejla Yatkin

Dance performance

November 9, 2009, 6 pm

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Goethe-Institut New York presents Dancing with the Berlin Wall, a dance performance in public space, which was developed by internationally recognized dancer and choreographer Nejla Y. Yatkin. Dancing with the Berlin Wall is the last event of her Berlin Wall project, featuring a film (The Wall), a stage performance (Wallstories), and the on-site performance on November 9.

Eight young dancers from all over the world will be moving together from the Ludlow 38 gallery to the Wyoming Building, the new event space of the Goethe-Institut New York. On their way through the Lower East Side they will be accompanied by the audience. Film clips will be projected on walls along their way. The film clips show the dancers in Berlin, dancing in front of and interacting with some remaining pieces of the Wall. Nejla Y. Yatkin has been hosting several talks and discussions (Words on the Wall) at the Goethe-Institut Wyoming Building since June, 2009, in order to gather different experiences, impressions, and opinions for inspiration during the development process of the project. The last discussion in this series will be on October 30, 2009, at 6pm.

Nejla Y. Yatkin is a 2008 Princess Grace Choreography Fellow as well as one of Dance Magazine’s “Top 25 to Watch.” Ms. Yatkin, a Berlin native with Turkish roots, grew up with The Wall. While for most of the world it was a striking symbol, for her it was a daily reality, and its existence and fall became personal landmarks. She is therefore using this piece as a means of reflecting on her own experience, but also as a broader reflection on boundaries and openness, constriction and freedom.

Dancing with the Berlin Wall is part of Performing Revolution in Central and Eastern Europe, a wide-ranging festival of performances, exhibitions, films, and symposia coordinated by The New York Library for the Performing Arts in association with cultural organizations and academic institutions throughout the city.
