One of the ultimate New York City party bands, Marc Ribot’s Los Cubanos Postizos (aka “The Prosthetic Cubans”) became a must-see attraction in the late 1990s, with its feverishly cooking shows built around arrangements of Cuban bandleader Arsenio Rodriguez – innovator of the son montuno, and two critically acclaimed albums released on Atlantic Records. Reformed by popular demand with the addition of Cuban’s own Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez on drums and original members Anthony Coleman (keys), Brad Jones (bass) and EJ Rodriquez (perc), 2011 had the band once again in front ecstatic audiences from the stages of the Montreal Jazz Festival, Fuji Rock Festival and Ellnora Guitar Festival at the Krannert Center of Performing Arts.

The four jazz musicians who sign under the name of the Timo Vollbrecht New York Group are passionate improvising artists. This explains the diverse, dynamic and at the same time constantly creative musical style of this New York based group. The musicians, who come from different continents, bring their cultural backgrounds to the bandstand in order to collectively explore the unknown. Melodic elements from classical music merge with the colorful harmonies and intricate rhythms of jazz, creating a vibrant, genuine sound.

They were brought together by the city of New York: Here, German saxophonist Timo Vollbrecht and Berliner guitarist of Japanese origin Keisuke Matsuno met bassist Sam Anning (Australia) and drummer Jason Burger (USA). Their high quality of musicianship, as well as the looseness with which they improvise, make this band a powerful cultural cocktail that captivates the audience from the first note on.

Timo Vollbrecht, who is one of Germany’s most important up-and-coming voices in jazz, studied with Mark Turner and performed alongside Joe Lovano, Kenny Werner and Brian Lynch. He won numerous awards and appeared on important stages such as the Blue Note Jazz Club New York or Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Lisbon-born Cape Verdean songstress Carmen Souza has it all: excellent repertoire, a mesmerizing, expressive and versatile voice that glides effortlessly through a huge range of registers and a spellbinding, charismatic stage presence. Whether she is singing the plaintive morna (the Cape Verdean variation of the blues) or an exuberant batuco, Souza is always convincing owing to her swingy jazz sense of timing and her virtuoso voice full of nuances from the highest to the lowest notes she sings. Singing in her ancestors’ Creole language and mixing traditional African and Cape Verde rhythms with contemporary jazz influences she creates a unique sound all of her own.

Jamshied Sharifi, a Persian-American, has composed scores for Hollywood films, written arrangements for major artists such as Ray Charles and Carole King, and performed with world music artists such as Kailash Kher, Yungchen Lhamo, and Mamak Khadem.  But the music that is closest to his heart is from his two solo records, One and A Prayer For The Soul Of Layla. He will perform songs from those records with his long-time friends and collaborators: Ole Mathisen on clarinet, Damon Banks on bass, and Benjamin Wittman on drums and percussion.

And while Sharifi’s initial focus in music can be credited to American jazz, it is his infusions of elements from the Middle East and Africa that make his music distinctive. He is an accomplished pianist and synthesizer player. Notably, Sharifi holds the synthesizer to an ‘acoustic’ standard and aims to play it with the detail and richness of articulation that comes naturally to an acoustic instrumentalist. To achieve this sound he uses a controller which allows him to manipulate the synthesizer with his breath. He combines this technique with a ribbon controller that allows him to bend the pitch smoothly and continuously with his finger. According to Jamshied, using both these techniques makes the instrument a “wind-driven, fretless synthesizer”.

Through the ’90s, bassist Matthew Garrison (co-owner of the Shapeshifter Lab) established a reputation in jazz circles after hitting the road with such high profile bands as Joe Zawinul’s Syndicate, Steve Coleman’s Five Elements, John McLaughlin’s The Heart Of Things, and the John Scofield Group. His remarkable speed and facility on electric 5-string fretted and fretless basses easily impressed the bass community, but it was Garrison’s sophisticated chordal approach on the instrument that clearly set him apart from other chopsmeisters on the scene.

With colorful traditional costumes and dynamic motion, Taikoza’s shows are immensely popular with audiences of all ages. Drawing from Japan’s rich tradition of music and performance, Taikoza has created a new sound using a variety of traditional instruments. In addition to drums of assorted sizes, Taikoza incorporates the shakuhachi and the fue (both bamboo flutes) and colorful dances. The group has toured internationally and has appeared on ESPN, NBC, History Channel, etc. Taikoza’s music is featured on Nintendo’s wii game: Red Steel.

Andy Andranik Madadian ( اندی آندرانیک مددیان), better known by his stage name ANDY, is an Iranian Armenian singer and former professional soccer player currently based in Glendale, California. He is often referred to as the “Persian Elvis Presley.”

He has been awarded Best Armenian International Singer of the year four times and in 1994 Universal Studios declared Andy the best Iranian singer of the decade. Andy has released fifteen music albums since the start of his career including “And My Heart…” in which he sings five tracks in Persian, two in Armenian, two in Spanish, two in English, one in Arabic, and one in Hindi. His music is currently banned by the government in Iran, but bootleg versions of his albums can be found very easily.
