Surviving members of Brooklyn bands Yellow Dogs and Free Keys have released an official statement about Sunday night’s brutal murder-suicide in East Williamsburg.
The following statement was written by Yellow Dogs’ Siavash ‘Obash’ Karampour and Koory Mirzeai, with help from band manager Ali Salehezadeh, Pooya Hosseini of Free Keys, and street artists Icy and Sot.
The Yellow Dogs , an Iranian alternative rock band, isn’t around us any more. Two members were killed this morning. Apparently by another Iranian musician. (Detailed story here: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/
For DooBeeDoo it’s a big loss because theses young musicians played kind of music which could have been the voice of young Iranians who want “to rock” in order to make some changes in their lives in Iran. My condolences……………….

A unique new workshop that spotlights composers whose work features improvisation as a compositional tool. Rocco John Iacovone‘s work is featured Nov 11, this Monday. His wife Denise will be doing an improvised painting of the music.
Each session will be multi-faceted, and focuses on improvisation within some compositional structure. The audience can watch an open rehearsal as the composer speaks to the ensemble about the work, the musical philosophy, and the approach to the composition. This is an insider’s look at what goes on in a rehearsal, and how composer’s and musicians work. After the hour rehearsal, there will be a performance of the new piece.

One day, out of the blue, a package arrived in the mail. It was a CD: Time Loops by Michael Harrison & Maya Beiser. I imagine being a music writer has such perks. I’m no stranger to the work of Michael Harrison (and have even had the pleasure of studying with him). So, I waited for the right moment to properly listen to and savor this latest musical offering from the maestro.

This film series features rarely screened films of the Iranian New Wave, an exceptional film movement that took place before the 1979 Islamic Revolution. During the cosmopolitan and yet turbulent period of the 1960s-1970s, an auteur cinema emerged and responded actively to the cultural, political, and social conditions of the time. Iranian New Wave is distinguished by its philosophical inclination, social critique, poetic disposition, and vigorous experimentation. This innovative spirit resonated with new cinematic trends sweeping across the globe at the time, from France and Czechoslovakia to Brazil and Japan. Collectively, the films present the artistic vision, humanism, and social consciousness of a generation of Iranian filmmakers.
