Grounded in the American improvisational tradition, Adam Rudolph’s Moving Pictures Octet embraces musical forms and instrumentation of Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the African diaspora. Veteran percussionist Adam Rudolph, who was called “ a percussion wizard” (Downbeat) and “a pioneer in world music (New York Times),” leads an ensemble of artists performing on instruments ranging from West and North African percussion, Middle Eastern oud (lute) and Japanese and Indian flutes to saxophones, clarinets, guitar and banjo. The program features the world premiere of music by Rudolph commissioned by Chamber Music America.

Enlisting a veritable Who’s Who of underground NY music legends, Kohane of Newark‘s (aka Ricky Orbach) critically acclaimed alt-rock operetta “New Midlife Crisis” introduces listeners to the aural landscape and lyric mythology of an American-Jewish middle class experience gone awry in a way that a Velvet Underground fan might appreciate. G. Calvin Weston came up in North Philadelphia, where he saw musicians such as Stevie Wonder, The Jackson Five, and James Brown at the Uptown Theater. Seeing his attention focused on the drummers, his father bought him a small set. In high school Calvin learned to read music and played second snare in the drum ensemble. He co-founded the group Bad Influence, which played in cabarets and clubs around Philadelphia. At 17, Calvin joined Ornette Colemans Prime Time Band with bass player Jamaaladeen Tacuma and Charlie Ellerbee, touring extensively in North America and Europe. Calvin went on to play and record with guitarist James “Blood” Ulmer, then joined John Lurie’s Lounge Lizards in 1990. During the late ‘90s Calvin recorded and toured with Billy Martin of Medeski Martin and Wood, Tricky, Eyvind Kang, Derek Bailey, Marc Ribot, and James Carter. He also played on several movie soundtracks, including “Get Shorty.” And he continues to lead his own groups. G. The trio called Harriet Tubman was formed in 1998, named after the heroic African-American slave who risked her life to escape from slavery, and helped more than 300 others to do the same. Deeply inspired by the ideals of freedom, the trio’s music plumbs the soul’s depths for liberated musical expression, continuing the process of contextual and musical innovation exhibited by such diverse artists as Ornette Coleman, Jimi Hendrix, Derrick May, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and Parliament Funkadelic, creating innovative compositional and cultural spaces, an important part of the African-American cultural tradition. Josh Roseman is a New York based trombonist, project organizer, composer and producer. He has worked with a wide range of improvising artists, including John Zorn, Dave Douglas’ Sextet, Dave Holland’s Grammy-winning Big Band, Steve Coleman, Don Byron, Lester Bowie’s Brass Fantasy, Uri Caine’s Mahler Ensemble, the SFJAZZ Collective, Steve Turre, Ron Blake and Oliver Lake. Roseman is also known for his work with creative electric artists Me’Shell NdegeOcello, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Soulive, Charlie Hunter, the Roots, Cibo Matto, Mike Gordon, Sean Lennon, the Skatalites, and the Groove Collective & Brooklyn Funk Essentials, of which he was a founding member.
