LENI STERN. Acclaimed guitarist and vocalist Leni Stern brings her African music ensemble to Barbés. The music juxtaposes Stern’s trademark inventive guitar and vocal explorations with the indigenous sounds of accomplished African instrumentalists. The result is at once haunting, exuberant, cinematic, personal and resoundingly assured. Featuring Leni Stern on n’goni, electric guitar, vocals, and calabash/Alioune Faye on sabar and djembe/Mamadou Ba on electric bass.
4. Mehmet Polat Trio US Concerts
Mehmet Polat is an accomplished oud player, composer, ensemble leader and soloist who tours internationally. From Africa to India, Persia to the Balkans, Contemporary to Jazz, he has been combining various musical genres with his Alevi Spiritual, Anatolian Folk and Ottoman classical music background. Through his improvisations, compositions and his own take on a variety of musical styles, Mehmet is constantly searching for new musical paths and inspiration. After many years of research, he invented his own technique to advance beyond the limitations of his traditional instrument. With this new left hand technique, he can play more advanced and modern pieces. He has also designed an ud with two extra bass strings to broaden the range and function of his instrument.
Mehmet has been based in Amsterdam since 2007.
His current project The Mehmet Polat Trio is a spiritual yet adventurous meeting of three masters of their magical instruments: ney, kora and oud. With roots in the Ottoman, ancient Anatolian, Balkan and West African music traditions, the trio welcomes you with its musical authenticity. The original compositions are colored by daring improvisations and grooves, presented in an atmosphere of chamber music. The Mehmet Polat Trio invites you to a sincere musical journey from the past to the present.

Marc Cary’s “Harlem Sessions,” which takes place every Thursday night at the New York City speakeasy Gin Fizz, continues to gain ground in the community that the keyboardist-composer-bandleader calls home, and where he’s emerging as a leader committed to the values of the Harlem Renaissance pioneers such as Langston Hughes and Duke Ellington, in the spirit of providing fresh lifeblood to Harlem’s unique and vibrant cultural scene.
Cary began hosting the late night jam session in May 2015, opening it to musicians, poets, rappers, dancers and comedians, and announcing the song menu in advance via social media, to develop an organic and crucial cutting ground for artists. It’s a celebration of local artists, groups and composers who truly brought a melting pot of influences together; take a song like “Harlem River Drive” (by pianist Eddie Palmieri‘s super group), cultivate it, and that typifies what this session is about and how deeply its local roots grow.
Cary’s longtime rhythm section features Rashaan Carter on bass and Sameer Gupta on drums/tabla.

I welcome all my musician, poet, artist, philosopher, and dancer friends to our late night Harlem Hang.
This is not your ordinary jam session. Each week, we aim to build and explore a new common repertoire with original arrangements in the live arena through ensemble work.
We will cover a wide span of music, from the performers and composers who developed this music, to our modern day peers. This will be a celebration of some of the greatest Black and American composers of our time and of our heritage.
In the spirit of all the creativity that came before us here in Harlem, we want to create new standards as community.

Alwan for the Arts and the Center for Traditional Music and Dance present MAQAM FEST 2016, featuring six ensembles, performing the language of maqam in varied musical styles.
Now in its fifth year, Maqam Fest features outstanding ensembles from New York and around the world that bring a unique approach and perspective on maqam. Developed more than one thousand years ago, maqam is a complex system of musical modes and represents one of the greatest legacies of the Arab-Islamic world, influencing musical traditions from the Maghreb (Northwest Africa) to Western China and from the Balkans to the Sudan.
The line-up at Maqam Fest 2016 features:
Abdoulaye Diabate and Super Manden, an extraordinary group of master musicians from West Africa performing in the jali (griot) tradition.
Dolunay, infusing new life to the timeless songs and melodies of the southern Balkan region and its rich ethnic diversity.
Kiran Ahluwalia, a modern purveyor of the great vocal traditions of India and Pakistan who has created a style uniquely her own — a heady hybrid of Indian grooves, Saharan desert blues with elements of jazz.
Newpoli, a group of exceptionally talented musicians specializing in Southern Italian Folk Music that integrates styles such as Tarantella-Pizzica, Tammuriata, Villanella and the Neapolitan Canzone.
Tareq Abboushi’s Shusmo Reunion, bringing new and exciting definition to the international music genre through rhythms rooted in Afro-Cuban, western classical, jazz, funk, gypsy and Arabic music, including the maqam.

Banning Eyre’s TIMBILA blazes ecstatic African rock with an East Village edge. The trance of African spirit possession merges with the trance of free-spirited head-bangers. Surreal buzzing timbila, hypnotic dream melodies of mbira, stinging guitar. The buzzing rhythmic attack of the Mozambican xylophone (timbila) and the hypnotic thrumming of Zimbabwean thumb piano (mbira) join with the sting of guitar in grooves that are deeply funky, and an alluring bed for vocals that are sweet, sassy and feminine, and harmonized in celestial English, Chopi and Shona.

Ibrahim Maalouf is a French trumpet player and teacher, composer and arranger. He was born in Beirut, Lebanon, and now lives in Paris, France. Maalouf was born into a family of intellectuals and artists; he is the son of trumpeter Nassim Maalouf and pianist Nada Maalouf, nephew of the writer Amin Maalouf and grandson of journalist, poet and musicologist Rushdi Maalouf. He is noted for playing Arabic music with quarter tones on the trumpet, which is a rare skill, pioneered by his father and Don Ellis in the 1960s.

Alwan for the Arts presents Tarab Edition, an evening of musical renditions demonstrating diverse instrumental, rhythmic and vocal techniques that vivify different regions of the Arab world. The musical styles featured are varied yet intimate and contemplative; all are unified under the aegis of the Maqam model system, a system whose “essentialist” element, or logos, strives to adhere, seamlessly, to the brilliance, miraculous and pure eloquence of the Arabic language.
The range of readings include the Syrian Muwashah, Iraqi Maqam, Kuwaiti Sawt, Homayni songs from Yemen, and 20th century Egyptian compositions made once alive in the memorable vocal experience and enduring interpretive resonance of the legendary Umm Kulthum.

George Ziadeh & Zafer Tawil Duo, exceptional and seasoned musicians who will be presenting the extraordinary music of Umm Kulthum.
Safaafir, the only US based group dedicated to the masterworks of the Iraqi Maqam tradition, presenting a colorful combination of expressive singing, the hammering of the Santur and the sonorous Jawzeh. The group is composed of brother and sister duo, Amir & Dena ElSaffar.
Abdulrahman Al Akhfash, an innovative performer of the rich Yemeni musical tradition, which is characterized by its rhythmic pulse and unique melodic structure.

Brooklyn Raga Massive presents a special concert at Rockwood’s intimate stage 3, free for APAP attendees. This 2 part concert highlights what BRM is all about, showcasing musicians who are a big part of our collective. We begin with our raga roots as the very talented vocalist, Samarth Nagarkar performs North Indian classical with tabla and harmonium accompaniment. The second part features compositions of BRM members, showcasing our signature cross-cultural style, rooted in India but indigenous to Brooklyn.
