Kazakhstani vocalist Saadet Türköz is a unique vocalist. She brings a storyteller’s sensibility to free improvisations…combined with the occasional Kazakh folk song.
She presents one of the most striking distillations of an age-old idiom. Her roots lie in the musical traditions of her forbearers, bred in the windswept steppe lands of what is now Eastern China. As a longtime resident of Zurich, European cultures have also flavored her perspective, but the music on Urumchi closely limns her ethnic heritage to create music that is both ancient sounding and bracingly immediate.
She will be joined by some of the most innovative musicians in New York: Satoshi Takeishi, Shahzad Ismaily, Avram Fefer and Raul Rothblatt.
6. VinScialla/ EricSchugren/ BrianCharette/ AlexSipiagin /JeffFairbanks
Date: Sunday, December 28, 2014
Time: 8pm
Venue: Rockwood Music Hall (196 Allen St, New York, New York 10002)

Eric Schugren- Tenor Sax
Vin Scialla -Drums/percussion
Brian Charette – Hammond B3
Jeff Fairbanks – trombone
& special guest Alex Sipiagin – Trumpet !
These musicians are carrying on the tradition of classic Blue Note albums. The compositions run the gamut from swing to adept use of Middle Eastern grooves, with Scialla providing a perfect rhythmic bed for the horns to soar, and Charette’s super cool B3 adding a nice texture throughout. All the musicians are tasteful soloists too, and complement each other the way all the great jazz combos were known for.
