1. 2014 Composers Now Festival – February 1-28
The Composers Now Festival celebrates living composers, the diversity of their voices, and the significance of their musical contributions to our society. During the month of February, the fifth annual festival brings together nearly 100 performances and innovative multi-media events presented by venues, ensembles, composers, orchestras, opera companies, dance companies, and others, throughout New York City. Experience the sounds and get to know the creators behind the music. From jazz to indie-rock, from classical to electronic and beyond, join us on a broad-stroke sonic journey through NYC’s new music landscape. Composers will be in attendance at all events and will be interacting with audiences. Composers Now is a project partner of The Fund for the City of New York. We gratefully acknowledge the support of the ASCAP Foundation, the Cheswatyr Foundation and the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation.

Pedro Joia, the superb Portuguese guitarist who accompanies many of the biggest fado stars, will join Ribeiro.

Perhaps best-known for performing and writing with legends like Ray Charles, Gary Peacock, and as one of Charles Mingus’ longest-tenured sidemen, trumpeter Jack Walrath is also a spirited bandleader and composer in his own right. Long-recognized as a virtuosic trumpeter, Walrath has distinguished himself in numerous aspects of his career, which now includes a GRAMMY® Award nomination for the Jack Walrath Quintet; commissions from a truly staggering variety of ensembles; and multiple composition and performance grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Aaron Copland Composition Grant, and more. Though his music is fresh and original, Walrath’s natural fit with Mingus is evident, and those who would enjoy the rhythmic intensity, regular mood shifts, and simultaneously challenging and supportive rhythm section associated with Mingus–albeit in a more straight-ahead context–will find a lot to enjoy in these sets.

The Mast is vocalist and instrumentalist Haleh Gafori and percussionist and beat maker Matt Kilmer. Incorporating live vocals, electronics, and percussion in their shows, The Mast creates a full-spectrum sonic experience that features “Haleh’s phenomenally powerful, nuanced, and hypnotic voice and Matt’s gorgeous deft beats (both sequenced and live)” (Wompblog). Influenced by early IDM, post dubstep, and experimental beat music as well as acts like Mount Kimbie, Massive Attack, and Bonobo, The Mast creates a warm and inviting sound that booms through the subwoofers, propels the body to dance, and soaks the mind in a bath of endorphins.
Archie Pelago is a production and live performance trio based in Brooklyn, NY. Formed in late 2010, the trio of Hirshi (trumpet/DJ), Cosmo D (cello/Ableton) and Kroba (sax/Ableton) combine their varied backgrounds in jazz and classical music with a common love for rhythm and the wide-open possibilities of electronic music. In the studio, the three produce collectively and prominently feature their instruments, lending deeply emotive patterns and textures to their tracks. On the stage, the group innovatively combines DJ-style performance with live playing and processing of their instruments, conjuring singular renditions of their original works as well as music that inspires them.
