During the ‘70- and ‘80’s, the Woodstock-based Creative Music Studio was considered the premier study center for contemporary creative music. Founded in 1971 by Karl Berger , Ingrid Sertso and Ornette Coleman, CMS brought together leading innovators in the jazz and world music communities. Unprecedented in its range and diversity, CMS was an acknowledged phenomenon in the international music world.
The Stone is proud to host a new series of CMS workshops in 2011: a new improviser’s workshop orchestra gets underway EVERY MONDAY NIGHT IN 2011 led by composer/pianist/vibist Karl Berger. Conducted in the tradition of the legendary Creative Music Studio (www.creativemusicstudio.org), original compositions, themes by the likes of Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, and world musical melodies will be utilized for orchestral explorations and contrasting solo/duo/trio flights. This series supports the Creative Music Studio Archive Project.

Petar Ralchev (accordion) is one of the brightest stars on the contemporary Bulgarian music scene. The founder of a unique performing style which he describes as “virtuosity, melodiousness, rich harmony and improvisation,” he is an inspiration for many young accordionists around the world today. Having inherited a wealth of tunes, rhythms and measures from the folk tradition, he takes them into new realms and leads them to new heights. His music captures the magic of Bulgarian folklore and mixes it with mystic rhythms of the Balkans.

The Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism proudly presents the 4th annual concert, Korea 21: Music Here and Now, in collaboration with Gugak FM Broadcasting System in Seoul and the Korean Traditional Performing Arts Association of NY. A Highlight of this event will be the select group of outstanding Korean traditional and popular music artists directly from Korea, which ranked in the top ten at the 2010, “21C Korean Music Project Competition,” one of the most prestigious new music competitions in South Korea.

Brandon Terzic is an up and coming oud virtuoso who has not only gotten a firm hold on the tradition, but has begun to add to the language and contexts of the instrument. He leads an outstanding lineup of musicians and they will be bringing there world/jazz stylings to the Cameo Gallery. They have been asked to do a May residency at this gallery in Williamsburg. It will be every thursday in May starting on the 5th.

8. Brahim Fribgane & Ibrahim Maalouf

Brahim Fribgane (oud & percussion) & Ibrahim Maalouf (quartertone-trumpet) will team up performing free-range jazz, Mediterranean roots, and Arabic sounds at the Lincoln Center. Fribgane, a composer and artful oud player and percussionist, has no qualms about collaborating across genres and boundaries (he’s played with everyone from Medeski Martin & Wood to Harry Belafonte). Maalouf is similarly open-minded: After learning the quarter-tone trumpet from his father, a horn designed to navigate the complexities of Arabic modes, he has carved a genre-bending career, working with musicians as varied as Marcel Khalife, Amadou & Miriam, and Elvis Costello.

BANDA SINALOENSE DE LOS MUERTOS – New York’s only Mexican Banda.
In the Mexican state of Sinaloa, brass bands (bandas) are part of every public celebration. In the 1940’s, the pioneering Banda El Recodo started mixing up traditional brass band tunes with contemporary Mexican music – mostly ranchera – and soon transformed the idiom into a powerful new popular genre. In the 1990’s, banda music experienced a renewal, especially among young Californian Mexicans, many of whom have family roots in Sinaloa. Banda music’s popularity exploded in Mexico as well and has become the new urban music of choice. Banda de Los Muertos will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo with a selection of classic tunes to get dead drunk to, with a supergroup of sorts featuring alumni of Slavic Soul Party and other NY top players.
