Daniel Levin is “one of the outstanding cellists working in the vanguard arena” (All About Jazz), and “very much the man to watch.” (Penguin Guide to Jazz). No matter what setting he plays in, cellist Daniel Levin occupies a musical space bordered by many kinds of music, but fully defined by none of them.
Juan Pablo Carletti was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He grew up in a musical environment in which his father played percussion, and was instantly drawn to the drums. As he performed with a variety of bands, he focused mainly on improvised music and playing mainstream jazz. He began working with his own projects, and created a small label dedicated to new music. In 2005, Juan traveled to New York City and played with the David Haney Group at Cornelia Street Cafe.
Sam Kulik moved to New York in 2004 and settled in the Astoria, Queens neighborhood. He plays improvised music and along the way has met many like-minded players through playing in the New York Soundpainting Orchestra and volunteers and generally hangs out at the Stone. Parallel to his activity as a serious improviser of music, he hooked up with several of the extremely talented rock musicians and songwriters that live in this city, and also found himself getting involved in playing music for theater and dance. He started touring a fair amount and meeting people all over the US and Europe.

Ehren Hanson began learning tabla when he was 15 years old under Misha Masud of New York City. In 2000, he was accepted as a disciple by the great Pandit Anindo Chatterjee and has developed into an exciting performer and a dynamic teacher. Ehren then went on to teach rhythm as an assistant professor at Bard College in 2002 and in 2005 he received the prestigious Senior Performing Arts Fellowship from the American Institute of Indian Studies. He has had the honor of accompanying great musicians such as Pandit Debi Prasad Chatterjee, Pandit Subrata Roy Chaudhuri, Steve Gorn, and others. In 2012, The Time of India described his tabla solo performance as “enthralling.” Ehren currently lives in New York where he is an active performer and teacher. He is also the director of the Anindo Chatterjee School of Tabla.

Master vocalist Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan makes a welcome return to the Rubin, his only public appearance in New York City this season.
He will be joined by Harshad Kanetkar on the tabla, Arun Ramamurthy on the violin, with Michael Harrison and Aaron Shragge as tamboura and vocal accompaniment.
Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan descends from a distinguished line of elders who reigned supreme in the world of music. He is the direct descendant of the great Abdul Karim Khan and Abdul Wahid Khan, the founders of the famous Kirana lineage. His father, the great sarangi player, Shakoor Khan was the grand nephew of Bande Ali, Beenkar, while Mehboob Baksh Khan and Aajiz Pia were Mashkoor’s great grandfathers.
Mashkoor was initiated into music and trained by his father for fifteen years and secured a place in the world of music very early in life. After his father’s demise, he joined the ITC-Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata, as a scholar, to polish and hone his undiluted style of Kirana gayakee (singing). Now, as a Guru of both the Sangeet Research Academy, and the American Academy of Indian Classical Music, he nurtures numerous vocalists and scholars under his able wings. His recitals reveal great imagination and vocal agility. An erudite musician, he possesses a keen understanding of the characteristic styles of Kirana gayakee, emphasizing the numerous permutations of musical phrases, known as “Khandmeru.”

Ayman Fanous has been described as a “master musician/composer… who has honed distinctive and unconventional methods on both guitar and bouzouki, managing to synergize classical, flamenco, and free jazz techniques” (Karl Ackerman, allaboutjazz.com). His signature sound has been described as a “stylistic amalgam of Derek Bailey and Paco de Lucia” (Jay Collins, Signal to Noise). In addition to the guitar, Fanous also reaches back into his Egyptian ancestry in improvisations on the bouzouki. This is informed by many years of absorbing influences from the musical traditions of the Arab world, Turkey, India, North Africa, Persia, and the Balkans.
Over two nights at The Firehouse Space, Fanous will bring together some of the most unique and acclaimed improvising musicians in New York to debut several different ensembles. Most of these groupings have never performed together before, and include several first meetings. In addition, this will include a rare NYC appearance by Baltimore’s Susan Alcorn, a pioneer of pedal steel guitar.

Quickly Quietly formed in 2011, at the end of the year they released their debut Seven EP. The band first played together in prospect-lefferts garden and continued grinding out improv sessions into a fresh sound from analog drum machines, deep guitar and heavy rhythms. The new sound, exemplified by the track “Nothing But Air,” is very electric and very live. Lautaro on drums and samples, Paul on bass and keys, Aaron on guitar and vox. Each member serves double duty to the music creating a eclectic sound and a wide palate, uncharacteristic of a rock trio. If there was an ethos to the band it would be song, texture, rhythm, electrified. Quickly Quietly are: Aaron Hyzen (guitar,vocals/leader), Paul Sikivie (bass & synths), Lautaro Burgos (SoSaLa, drums ), Greg Zweiben (SoSaLa, synths & percussion)- This band plays edgy indie-esque rock.

CYRO BAPTISTA & SERGIO KRAKOWSKI. The duo formed by these two NY-based Brazilian percussion players turn away from conventional stereotypes to present an innovative expression both in musical and technological terms.Cyro Baptista has emerged as one of the world’s premier percussionists since arriving in the US from in 1980. He has performed luminaries such as Paul Simon, Herbie Hancock, John Zorn, Yo-Yo Ma, Sting, Caetano Veloso, and many others, as well as his own Beat the Donkey project. Sergio Krakowski is considered a master of the Pandeiro. In twenty years of career, he has shared the stage with artist such as Anat Cohen, Edmar Castañeda, Maria Bethânia and Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Krakowski also uses his knowledge as a Computer Music PhD to allow percussion instruments to trigger videos, control effects and interact with the machine, creating real time dialogues between percussionist and computer. This innovative technology blends perfectly well with the talent and charisma of Baptista, to create a free percussive narrative that engages the audience through sound and image.

Gnawa music is performed in a “Lila,” an entire night of celebration, dedicated to healing and trance guided by the Maalem and his group. Maalem Hassan Ben Jaafer, who is a one of a kind master, inherited Gnawa Music from his father Sidi Abdullah Ben Jaafer Sultan Gnawa, and will be playing alongside the young generation master Samir LanGus who learned Gnawa music in the streets of Agadir, Morocco.
