During the ‘70- and ‘80’s, the Woodstock-based Creative Music Studio was considered the premier study center for contemporary creative music. Founded in 1971 by Karl Berger , Ingrid Sertso and Ornette Coleman, CMS brought together leading innovators in the jazz and world music communities. Unprecedented in its range and diversity, CMS was an acknowledged phenomenon in the international music world.
The Stone is proud to host a new series of CMS workshops in 2011: a new improviser’s workshop orchestra gets underway EVERY MONDAY NIGHT IN 2011 led by composer/pianist/vibist Karl Berger. Conducted in the tradition of the legendary Creative Music Studio (www.creativemusicstudio.org), original compositions, themes by the likes of Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, and world musical melodies will be utilized for orchestral explorations and contrasting solo/duo/trio flights. This series supports the Creative Music Studio Archive Project.

Leni Stern’s recordings, especially on “Africa,” an album inspired by her immersion in Malian and Senegalese culture made her know in the African music scene. Clearly the German-born, New York-based singer-songwriter-guitarist has found another home. Recorded mostly at singer Salif Keita’s studio in Bamako, Mali, “Africa” is a cross-cultural prayer meeting of sorts. She’s playing with a special trio with the amazing Patrick Andriantsialonina on electric bass and incredible Tim Keiper on percussion!

On June 4th, a collection of NYC’s finest musicians will pay tribute to the influential singer/composer/artist/poet Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart, who passed away from complications due to Multiple Sclerosis last December. —
Impossible to define, classify, or categorize, Beefheart’s music touched upon the blues, free jazz, avant-garde, rock, prog, swing, & spoken-word, culminating in his best-known work, “Trout Mask Replica”. A sprawling double-album released in 1969 and produced by Frank Zappa, Trout Mask Replica; is frequently mentioned by such publications as Mojo, The Wire, and Rolling Stone as one of the greatest albums of all time. —
The line up: Gary Lucas (Beefheart alumni, Jeff Buckley), Nona Hendryx (Labelle, Talking Heads), Nina Persson (The Cardigans), Nathan Larson (Shudder To Think), Cynthia Sley (Bush Tetras), Doug Gillard (Guided By Voices), Mike Fornatale (The Left Banke), Eric Slick (Dr. Dog), and Weasel Walter (Behold The Arctopus), will be joined by musicians from the rock, jazz, metal, progressive, blues, experimental, & classical worlds to perform faithful and interpretive versions of songs from Beefheart’s entire catalog, from his 1966 debut Safe As Milk to his final record Ice Cream For Crow, released in 1982. —

NYC’s own Boshra Al Saadi (aka Saadi, who did the fresh cover of Dylan’s “Mama, You Been on My Mind”, which Pitchfork debuted) and collaborative partner Dither Down Records founder Tim Wagner (33Hz), have teamed up with Sierra Leone artists Ahmed Janka Nabay (of True Panther and Bubu Gang) and Pupa Bajah of the increasingly momentous Dry Eye Crew. “There’s something beautifully unsettling about the music Syrian-born rocker-turned-synth-queen SAADI makes. Sure, it’s jaunty, canorous, and massively danceable. But it’s also composed of broken-down doll melodies, tainted by screwy pops and wormy schizophrenia. It’s weird. It’s different.

As an accompanist and as a member of Highland Soles, the Pearlman family band, Neil Pearlman has been moving to and making Scottish music professionally for more than a decade. Pearlman is rapidly distinguishing himself as a uniquely innovative artist in the contemporary traditional music scene and his newest project continues that trend. Drawing on a musical influences from Latin, Funk, Jazz, and other genres, the group infuses traditional Scottish melodies with new ideas without losing their essentially Scottish spirit.

Festival Of New Trumpet presents the NYC premiere of trumpeter/composer Wadada Leo Smith’s Ten Freedom Summers, a three-part suite dedicated to the American civil rights movement between 1954-1964: “Brown v. Board of Education” (equal protection, 1954); “Little Rock Nine” (desegregation in education, 1957); and “Freedom Summer” (voter registration, 1964). Born in Leland, Mississippi in 1941, Smith had a first-hand view of the revolutionary activities that inspired this work. The piece is written specifically for the musicians in Smith’s signature ensemble, the Golden Quartet; an ensemble of master composer/performers, whose experimental practice utilizes the quartet form, considered by Smith the purest foundation of musical expression in jazz/creative music and western music culture. The appearance of Wadada Leo Smith’s Golden Quartet is made possible by Chamber Music America’s Presenting Jazz program, and Smith’s composition Ten Freedom Summers was commissioned through the CMA program New Jazz Works: Commissioning and Ensemble Development. Both programs are supported through the generosity ofthe Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
