To describe the music played by Lo’Jo, one would have to delve both into a dictionary of the world’s rhythms and an encyclopedia of universal harmonies. One would borrow from them adjectives like “shamanic”, “polyglot”, and wander from savannas to deserts, from rivers to oceans, from meadows to asphalt roads; there would be sunrays and dust clouds, rain effluvia, fire scents and spicy flavors, ululations, fiestas and bivouacs; not a junk of sounds, no, rather a great acoustic soul.
This angelic French tribe has been roving the world with its heterogeneous and eclectic musical luggage for twenty-five years. Not a band, rather a caravan, a collective of incorrigible backpackers/tightrope walkers/globe-trotters, open to every experience and every encounter. Along a dozen of records, Lo’Jo’s gang, coming from the punk, the jazz, the rock, has explored as many musical lines as continents. As Denis Péan, singer and songwriter, says, “our music is an anarchic garden we try to cultivate so as to make it both beautiful and wild. We are like farmers: we play with time.”

Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan has musical blue blood in his veins owing to his family lineage. A direct descendant of the family of the great Ustad Abdul Karim Khan and the much legendary Sartaj-e-Mousiqui, Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan who were the founders of the famous Kirana Gharana. Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan is the son of the great Sarangi-nawaz, Padmashree Ustad Shakoor Khan, who was the grand nephew of Ustad Bande Ali Khan Beenkar who composed numerous bandishes under his pseudonym ‘Sabras”. Salif Keita’s career as a musician will always be colored by a history of ostracism due to his albinism, and the fact that he is a member of the Royal Family of Mali and the caste restrictions that should have barred him from becoming a performer. Instead, “The Golden Voice of Africa,” has become one of the most celebrated African vocalists of all time. With a career that spans four decades, his undeniable musical influence has had an impact worldwide — from western pop and rock to Pink Floyd, among others. He will be performing as part of the Summerstage Series at Central Park, as part of the North American tour in support of his new album La Différence (Emarcy Records – June 8, 2010).

Tabou Combo is Haiti’s preeminent high-energy dance band, singing in English, Spanish, French and their native Creole. Tabou’s fresh interpretation of konpa borrows equally from Haiti’s traditional drum-heavy carnival music, the meringue of the Dominican Republic, and American R&B and soul.
Lo’Jo is a sextet that builds on France’s popular art form of street performance to reflect their diverse communal culture, and truly push the traditional music into a modern context by incorporating a variety of international grooves.
