using the thunderous rhythms of the ancestral Taiko drums and the magical sounds of the
bamboo flutes. Roughly translated, Taiko means big drums-and that’s exactly what Taikoza brings. Big Drums, powerful rhythms, and electrifying, room-thumping energy. This
exciting group draws from Japan’s rich tradition of music and performance to create a highly
visual performance.
Taikoza was formed in New York City by members of Ondekoza (the group that started the
renaissance of taiko in Japan in the 60s and introduced Taiko to the world). The members of Taikoza have performed in some of the most prestigious halls and locations such as Carnegie Hall, Boston Symphony Hall, Suntory Hall, Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Hall and House of
Music, Osaka Festival Hall, Lincoln Center, Mount Fuji, Miyajima Temple in Hiroshima, Peace Memorial Hall in Hiroshima and many others. They have performed in Russia, Italy, Brazil, Argentina, Switzerland, Germany, France, Mexico, Belarus, Republic of Georgia, and many

Amirtha’s background in Hindu devotional singing or Bhajan, led her to use the Indian harmonium as accompaniment and compositional tool. Amirtha has been singing with the harmonium since the age of 4 and has a deep connection to its timbre, intonation and mystical qualities. She was also inspired in part by her work with Darius Jones and the Carnatic tradition, to use abstract syllables to liberate the voice from specific literal ideas to facilitate unhindered improvisation, and to allow the listener a greater range of interpretation.
Her music has developed through years of dedicated collaboration with bands, composers and other improvisers, finally leading to her own individual sound. She owes her developing sound to her cultural traditions, 90s R&B, John and Alice Coltrane, Edgard Varèse and many other musical languages and influences. The name Mother Tongues partly refers diversity of what she feels are equally native musical languages, that have found their expression in these compositions. Her actual mother tongue is Tamil.

This Women Percussion ensemble, Alakande spreads joy by way of music. They share this joy through powerful, spiritual, and funky rhythms on the drums. Their performance takes audiences on a musical journey throughout the African Diaspora. The artists in Alakande have diverse backgrounds and contribute a wide range of professional experience to the group as a whole. The group was formed by percussionist Joan Ashley.

Composer/flutist and 2014 Guggenheim Award Fellow, Jamie Baum, known for her award-winning Septet+ (of fifteen years and still going strong) and long-form compositions, presents her new group, Short Stories. In this setting, each short composition is created to explore a particular vibe or concept featuring a core quartet with guests, forming a modular group and concept. Short Stories made its debut performance on January 8th, 2015 at The Greenwich House, NYC, as part of Jazz Resolutions 2015 during the APAP/Winter JazzFest/JazzConnect weekend and was filmed by Mezzo/Kidem, a French TV/Online film crew and will be broadcast in September 2015.

Go: Organic Orchestra is unique in the realm of approaches to improvisational conducting. Utilizing non-linear notation in an original music score, composer and artistic director Adam Rudolph conducts between 20 and 50 musicians with his prototypical conducting system. Over the past twelve years he has taught and conducted hundreds of musicians in Go: Organic Orchestra concepts in both North America and Europe, most recently in Naples, Oslo and Istanbul.
Unique in the realm of approaches to improvisational conducting, Organic Orchestra utilizes a composed non-linear score as material for creating the musical moment. Composer and Artistic Director Adam Rudolph has constructed a music score using innovative and experimental means with which to conduct the players through music/letter grids, language themes, Indian Ragas and song forms to create the moods, movement and sonic gestures. The musicians also learn Rudolph’s rhythm concept:”Cyclic Verticalism”, whereby poly rhythms (used in African music) are combined with rhythms cycles (used in Indian music). Utilizing these elements in an spontaneous way, elements will weave what Rudolph calls an “audio syncretic music fabric” that serves as a platform for improvisation and self expression.

Incrementally, over the course of the 20 minute performance, people will be asked to read from different texts. Every 45 seconds a new audience member will stand and read, adding to the layers of sound. This accumulation will continue until the room is filled with an onslaught of words, sentences, paragraphs and ideas. People have shared different reactions to this piece. Some find it soothing, others see it as chaotic. I see it as a day in the life of our minds: a constant, cumulative process of thought.

Hans Tammen’s Turbulent Flow is part of the Circuit Bridges: The Round Trip which is collaborating with Jane Wang of Mobius, an artist-run organization in Cambridge Massachusetts, whose mission is to generate, shape and test experimental art, on the closing concert of our second season. Also featuring the world premiere of Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame: Eva Ingolf, electric violin, presenting fifteen one-minute works by fifteen composers written specifically for Ingolf and three new animations by artist Nicole Antebi.
“Turbulent flow, long considered a form of chaos, is now know to possess an intricate structure of vortices and eddies within other vortices and eddies… The spatial structure of turbulence, like that of any structure that is made of small copies of itself, is said to have a “fractal” nature… Like a vortex, which maintains its shape despite the fact that it is but part of a violently moving fluid, a command system in battle must form an island of stability amid the surrounding chaos, an island created by the same forces producing the turmoil around it.” (Manuel DeLanda).

They met via myspace and started playing together as 75 Dollar Bill approximately eight years later. Brown plays percussion and homemade horns and Chen plays electric guitar.
