A SPIRITUAL CURRENT always powers Leni Stern’s recordings, especially on “Africa,” an album inspired by her immersion in Malian and Senegalese culture. Clearly the German-born, New York-based singer-songwriter-guitarist has found another home. Recorded mostly at singer Salif Keita’s studio in Bamako, Mali, “Africa” is a cross-cultural prayer meeting of sorts.

5. Luciano

Called “The Messenjah” by many, reggae artist Luciano has been building his career internationally for the past 20 years. After bursting onto the music scene with numerous hit songs in Jamaica, he rose up as one of the dominating reggae voices on today’s global scene, making waves with a sound whose influences include Stevie Wonder, Frankie Paul, and Dennis Emmanuel Brown. Luciano has toured the world extensively, reaching Africa, Australia, Europe, and Asia, as well as undertaking numerous North American tours, performing in festivals and clubs across the country. Over the course of his career he has released over 45 albums.

7. Karl Berger’s Improvisers Orchestra–Season Finale

Free Jazz/World Music giant Karl Berger leads his 25+ improvisational music ensemble through the final concert of this season. Who knows who will turn up for this blow-out? The usual group of suspects are hot enough but season closers for this band have always been extra special!

Karl Berger developed an innovative orchestra comprised of 25+ professional string, horn, reed and percussionist soloists. The KBIO takes the principles of CMS Orchestra Workshops to a professional level, with astounding results. Through an open ‘rehearsal’ that precedes each performance, audiences can listen and watch as Karl transmits the “Music Mind” concepts he developed at CMS. Audiences can see how Karl shapes the sound and feel of the orchestra and how he gets the musicians to harmonize and blend orchestral sounds in an improvisational setting. Conducted in Karl’s inimitable style, this orchestra of extraordinary improvisers explores original themes, melodies from the world’s folk traditions and compositions written by legendary improvisers such as Don Cherry or Ornette Coleman, as well as musical ideas that arise spontaneously. One of the orchestra’s trademarks is Ingrid Sertso’s uncanny vocalization and poetry. The Improvisers Orchestra completed an eight-month residency at The Stone followed by three months at the Jazz Gallery, and then ongoing work at both El Taller Latino Americano and Shapeshifter Lab, all in various parts of NYC.

The Yellow Dogs, a post- punk band integral to the creation of the underground music scene in Tehran,  were first exposed by the Cannes Festival award winning film “No One Knows About Persian Cats” which shows the underground music scene in Iran. Now 3 years since their arrival, they’ve sought asylum from government persecution in the throes of Brooklyn and established themselves in their new home while earning recognition from Rolling Stone, and Spin to Oyster Magazine and The Huffington Post. Releasing 2 EPs , “In the Kennel” and “Upper Class Complexity” via their own label, Neverheard Inc in which their sound was described by eMusic as “a little out-of-step with the current Brooklyn-scene moment, but in the best possible way”.  Consistently playing in their now home,  Brooklyn  they have also traveled through out 36 states,  and even opened for bands such as The Black Lips, The Oh Sees, and Chk Chk Chk.  It seems that the Yellow Dogs “crackle with more life, wit, tension and imagination than most of their peers….maybe there’s
something to be said for having to work for it.”

11. Batterie-en-Valise

Batterie-en-Valise is new music for two percussionists and six suitcases from Brooklyn-based found-percussionist Eric Farber (The Lisps, Foundry’s Good Person of Szechwan, FUTURITY), featuring Dylan Thurston (Physics of Meaning, David Karsten Daniels).

Six gutted-out vintage suitcases – each housing a quirky collection of curated found objects – transform into a cacophonous jungle gym of mounted percussion assemblages and dangling curiosities.

Inspired by the composer’s own fraught relationship to technology, the music superimposes a long history of traditional rhythms onto an unstable contemporary frame, telling the story of a world that is losing its connection with authentic meaning.      www.kineticontology.com

Carla Cubit‘s artworks are small mixed media assemblage pieces using many found objects and are highly visionary in nature. The materials used are often discarded hardware and recycled objects. My Devil, Revelation XII and Sacrifice sculptures are small colorful sculptures made of driftwood, shells, toothpicks, feathers, beads, wire, paint and other materials. Spiritual God depicts the progression of humanity in sculpture form. She loves the arts in whatever medium it may be; music, theater, dance etc; and she believes in religion, mysticism and the secret meaning of the unknown and art as a universal means of communication.
I would like to invite you to “Occupy Music Art Show”, a one week solo art show of my Occupy artwork. This exhibition, art show and reception is to be held at The Music Building on Sunday, July 14th from 7pm until 10pm @ space 505.
