THE SATURATORS came together in March of 2015 to spark up some vicious New York funk. Born and raised in New York City, Akua Dixon grew up in a family suffused with music. She started playing with her sister, the late violinist Gayle Dixon, shortly after the cello came into her life in the 4th grade. After graduating from the prestigious “Fame” High School of the Performing Arts, Dixon studied at the Manhattan School of Music at a time when the only track available focused on European classical music. She describes her post- graduation gig in the pit band at the Apollo Theater as an essential proving ground. Backing a disparate array of stars from Rev. James Cleveland and Barry White to James Brown and Dionne Warwick, she developed a vast idiomatic repertoire.

These concerts will present new and improvised music that spans styles from rock to experimental. Ron Anderson will perform with two different groups each night featuring musicians that he has worked with from his formative days in the 1980’s till present.

Ava and Ron have performed as an electric guitar duet a number of times the past two years, always with surprising and interesting results. They are both masters on their instruments and wizards on effects pedals.

Matthew Aidekman- flower vase and Hans Tammen-synthesizer
Together, they set out on flower vase and synthesizer to create music of an intricate beauty. This is not hellish music, but music of a place in space where sonic pleasures are strong, intense and dangerous, but also mesmerizing and at times irresistible. The non-human sounds and melodic gestures are counter-balanced by construed, yet strangely natural, rhythm patterns where beats drift in and out of time, mutate and wash away, only to be reeled back in, dressed up for more adventures. This gives the music a warm and structured feel, like analogue patina on what is not really such a hard and impenetrable surface.
Matthew Aidekman smacks, bows, clicks, works with, and wildly waves his hands in front of whatever and whoever he possibly can to make sounds that range from heart warming to gut wrenching. One outlet for this obsession is his collection of store bought vases which he plays musically as if they were built with this purpose in mind.
Hans Tammen creates sounds that have been described as an alien world of bizarre textures and a journey through the land of unending sonic operations. He produces rapid-fire juxtapositions of radically contrastive and fascinating sounds, with micropolyphonic timbres and textures, aggressive sonic eruptions, but also quiet pulses and barely audible noises.

10pm – David Grubbs– solo electric guitar David Grubbs is Professor of Music at Brooklyn College and the Graduate Center, CUNY. At Brooklyn College he also teaches in the MFA programs in Performance and Interactive Media Arts (PIMA) and Creative Writing. He is the author of Records Ruin the Landscape: John Cage, The Sixties, and Sound Recording (Duke University Press). He has released twelve solo albums and appeared on more than 150 commercially-released recordings. He is known for his cross-disciplinary collaborations with writers Susan Howe and Rick Moody, visual artists Anthony McCall, Angela Bulloch, and Stephen Prina, and choreographer Jonah Bokaer. His work has been presented at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, MoMA, the Tate Modern, and the Centre Pompidou. Grubbs was a member of the groups Gastr del Sol, Bastro, and Squirrel Bait, and he has performed with the Red Krayola, Will Oldham, Tony Conrad, Pauline Oliveros, and Loren Connors, among many others. He is a grant recipient from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts; a contributing editor in music for BOMB Magazine; director of the Blue Chopsticks record label; and a member of ISSUE Project Room’s Board of Directors.

R&R first performed in January 2015 as a quartet, under the title ‘Challenge Listening’ with Patricia Nicholson, Jason Jordan – dance and music – Jason Kao Hwang, TA Thompson. The quintet came together at Judson Church on Saturday July 12 2015 at the 20th Vision Festival with the addition of Bill Mazza’s live art projections. This will be the most complete presentation.
Resurrection Revolution (R&R) is a unique quintet with 2 dancers, 2 musicians and a visual artist. The unique idea is that the band is built on an aesthetic and a social common, rather than a single artistic discipline.
The aesthetic might be called FreeJazz utilizing improvisation as the base and employing clear structures that are built in rehearsals and in the course of living. All members share a sophisticated and highly developed understanding of what improvisation is as well as a common social understanding that we share responsibility for our world.

Rohan and Payton explore historical connections between the two art forms, while simultaneously breaking new ground. Rohan was groomed by mridandam maestro Guruvayur Dorai. Rohan has been performing internationally since a young age. The Times of India called him the “Musical ambassador . . . the pride of India.” Payton MacDonald is learning Dhrupad vocal from the acclaimed Gundecha Brothers. He has performed in India, the U.S., Canada, and Europe. The Hitaveda wrote: “Dr. Payton MacDonald with his melodious voice spread the beauty of Dhrupad, its subtle finer points and the way he sang seemed to be spiritualistic. His solo Dhrupad performance was encouraging and not less than any young Indian Dhrupad singer.”

Sandip Chatterjee, a disciple of Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya and vocal maestro Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, is a rich and accomplished Santoor player. Sandip has been extensively performing in many music festivals and concerts all around the globe and has also collaborated with many overseas musicians across genres such as Jazz, Rock, Contemporary and Fusion. His expertise has also been utilized by renowned music directors like A.R.Rahaman, Jatin Lalit, Gulsan Kumar, Rabindra Jain, Pt.V.Balsara etc.His ethnic aesthetics had also won him many awards and laurels such as, “President of India Award”, “Jadubhatta Award” and “Sangeeth Ratna Award”.
Sri Subhajyoti Guha, a highly talented, young tabla player from Kolkata. Subhajyoti’s intense dedication and love for his art has won him quite a few laurels, including the President’s Award from All India Radio in 1989, The Dover Lane Talent Search Award in 1990-91, and many more. At present he is a grade ‘A’ tabla player of All India Radio & T.V.

About 10 years ago, Dawoud developed a method of music performance for yoga and martial arts classes. The idea was to both harmonize the music with the energies invoked in the class, and to invoke energies needed.
One of the inevitable results of this was obvious. Dawoud has begun to use the techniques he developed to conduct guided meditation. The difference here is that while guided meditations have traditionally used words, suggestions, imagery, etc. to guide the individual’s and group’s meditation, Dawoud’s method uses musical form.
Attendees of past sessions have reported experiences ranging from simply emerging refreshed and relaxed, to having had trance induced visions and even out of body experiences.
The music for these sessions is completely improvised. No recordings are available, as the unique energy and “vibe” of the individual session cannot be reproduced.

Bobby Previte is a composer and performer whose work explores the nexus between notated and improvised music. One of the seminal figures of the 80’s New York ʻDowntownʼ scene, Previte is the winner of the 2015 Greenfield Prize for music. as well as a 2012 Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship. He has received multiple awards for composition from the NEA, NYFA, NYSCA, NY State Music Fund, and the American Music Center. Mr. Previte has been an artist-in-residence at the Rockefeller Foundation in Bellagio, Italy, Civitella Ranieri, The Montalvo Arts Center, and nine times at the MacDowell Colony.
His original compositions have been recorded and released on Sony, Elektra, Rykodisc, Palmetto, New World, Ropeadope, Thirsty Ear, and Cantaloupe. Leading a plethora of diverse ensembles from his instrument, the drums, he has collaborated with many of the leading lights in and beyond the world of music – master composer John Adams, rock icon Tom Waits, and legendary filmmaker Robert Altman.
His music has been labeled as “utterly original,” by the New York Times, while The New Yorker says his ensembles “speak in visionary tongues,” and the Village Voice calls him “a serious composer with the heart of a roadhouse rocker.”
His newest work, TERMINALS, Five Concertos for Percussion Ensemble and Soloist, was released October 28th by Cantaloupe Music.
