Kosi’s more than just a drama queen. She’s got piercing eyes and a voice that’s larger than her body. But, small as she is, she won’t fit in a box. She switches styles more quickly than you can follow. First she’s jazz, then she’s blues, then she’s rock, but always powerful.

ELLIOT HUMBERTO KAVEE ~ DRUMS

Waldron Mahdi Ricks our trumpet player will not be with us on this night as he is playing in Italy, he will be with us in spirit though so Jorge and I will be holding down the front line horn section and our drummer, Kenny is also on tour but we have the amazingly talented Elliot Humberto Kavee who plays with Henry Threadgill’s Zooid with us and that will be thrilling.

The ACE (Afro-Caribbean Experimental) Collective is breaking new territory with its musical amalgamation of the Afro-Caribbean diaspora, the jazz tradition, and free music art-forms. Artists such as Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus and Dizzy Gillespie used Afro-Caribbean rhythms in their compositions, but their work didn’t experiment with the pulses in these rhythms; part of what sets the ACE Collective apart is their expansion and reconfiguration of these pulses. In addition, the Collective includes poetry and storytelling in many of its pieces, and they also bring to light traditional songs from the Afro-Caribbean tradition. Clearly this music goes deep and wide, and the result is a multi-layered, multi-cultural aural banquet. Florence Wetzel – ALL ABOUT JAZZ, November 28, 2013

quickly quietly formed in 2011, at the end of the year they released their debut Seven EP. The band first played together in prospect-lefferts garden and continued grinding out improv sessions into a fresh sound from analog drum machines, deep guitar and heavy rhythms. The new sound, exemplified by the track “Nothing But Air,” is very electric and very live. Lautaro on drums and samples, Paul on bass and keys, Aaron on guitar and vox. Each member serves double duty to the music creating a eclectic sound and a wide palate, uncharacteristic of a rock trio. If there was an ethos to the band it would be song, texture, rhythm, electrified.

Paul Sikivie: electric bass, analog synths, tr909

milán is the music of Maria Neckam, who has made a name for herself on the international stage as a unique and versatile singer/songwriter coming out of the New York downtown scene. She has been praised by the press — from the New York Times to NPR’s “A Blog Supreme,” and Le Monde in France — as a “trailblazer,” and “natural wonder.” She has also lent her voice to countless other artists’ projects, such as: four-time Grammy award winner Erykah Badu, composer Ted Hearne and the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra, HipHop producer Mesta Bish, and Indie Rock artist David Bronson.

MNDR: Amanda Warner and Peter Wade were introduced to each other one year ago, when she arrived in New York from Oakland, CA. Born and raised on a farm in Fargo, North Dakota, Amanda has used MNDR as an “alter-ego” artist nickname in various scenes across the US, having toured with and opened for groups including Yacht, The Shins, and Deerhoof. A self professed gear head, Amanda started programming beats as a teenager and her impressive skills recently landed her an offer from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ to design their touring keyboard rig for It’s Blitz.

The Mast: The Brooklyn-based duo The Mast is vocalist and instrumentalist Haleh Gafori and percussionist and beat maker Matt Kilmer. Influenced by early IDM, post dubstep, and experimental beat music as well as acts like Mount Kimbie, Massive Attack, and Bonobo, the band creates a warm and inviting sound that propels the body to dance and soaks the mind in a bath of endorphins. In their live shows, The Mast creates a full-spectrum sonic experience incorporating live electronics, percussion, and vocal improvisation within and between songs enabling the spontaneity they were accustomed to as instrumentalists

Mitra Sumara is New York City’s only Farsi Funk group. This international party band gets down with the vibrant pop and funk music of 60s/70s Iran, an infectious pre-Revolutionary sound which combined the beats of Fela Kuti, salsa, and disco with Middle Eastern melodies and flowery poetry.
Interpreting hits by Iran’s beloved singers Googoosh, Pooran, Aghassi, Leila Forouhar, Nooshafarin, and Zia Atabi’s intoxicating Bandari beat tunes, Mitra Sumara’s repertoire also includes American hits of the era translated into Farsi. East meets West meets East while delighted audiences sing along.

The New York Times calls him the “ambassador for a silenced music.”  Honored as a peacemaker and virtuoso, Amir Alan Vahab is one of New York’s most celebrated and distinguished composer / vocalists of sufi and folk music; his work transcends political boundaries while maintaining traditional sensibilities in a way few artists can manage. Amir Vahab’s music is rooted in tradition, but has been influenced by contemporary sounds. Like Amir himself, his music symbolizes diversity-in-unity.   Amir Vahab is currently Teaching and lecturing private and group classes in universities, libraries, museums and cultural centers on the one hand, and organizes music therapy and sound healing workshops on the other.
