Formed in 2006 in New York City, Kinan Azmeh’s CityBand immediately gained recognition for their virtuosic and high energy performance. With this New York ensemble, Azmeh strives to reach a balance between classical music, jazz, and the music of his homeland, Syria. His expressive clarinet meets Kyle Sanna’s rustic guitar, soaring at times over the dynamic and volatile backdrop of John Hadfield’s percussion and Josh Myers’ double bass. Each band member has come from varied backgrounds to add their personal flair to this ensemble, resulting in a thoroughly exciting and rewarding listening experience.
Suphala w/ percussionists John Hadfield and Matt Kilmer – Suphala is one the most versatile young tabla artists making music today. Raised in the U.S. by Indian parents, Suphala began learning western classical music on the piano at age four, performing at age five, and as a teenager transferred her passion to one of the world’s most complex percussion instruments: the tabla. She combines an unparalleled technical command of her instrument with a playful sense of experimentation as she switches effortlessly between composing, producing and performing.

“Text of Light explode with a formidable combination of free jazz skronk, seismic percussion, tonal drone and searing guitar noise,” said The WIRE magazine in 2008. The group was formed in 1999 with the idea to perform improvised music to the films of Stan Brakhage and other members of the American Cinema avant-garde of the 1950s-60s, an under-known period of American filmic poetics (Brakhage’s film ‘The Text of Light’ was used at the premiere performances and was the namesake of the group).
The core members of the group are Lee Ranaldo and Alan Licht (guitars/devices) and Ulrich Krieger (sax/electronics). They are often joined by a rotating core of additional members (including Christian Marclay, DJ Olilve, William Hooker and others), depending on individual schedules, so the group takes on various permutations—sometimes all members participate, sometimes not.

With his incomparable voice, full of falsetto swoops and nuanced turns of phrase, Al Green rose to prominence in the Seventies. One of the most gifted purveyors of soul music, Green has sold more than 20 million records. During 1972 and 1973, he placed six consecutive singles in the Top Ten: Stay Together, Look What You Done for Me, I’m Still in Love With You, You Ought to Be With Me, Call Me and Here I Am (Come and Take Me). Stay Together topped the pop chart for one week and the R&B charts for nine; it was also revived with great success by Tina Turner in 1984. In terms of popularity and artistry, Green was the top male soul singer in the world, voluntarily ending his reign with a move from secular to gospel music in 1979.

About Claire Daly
She is a working jazz musician in New York City. She has won many awards including several Downbeat Critic’s Polls and the Jazz Journalist Award for baritonist of the year.
Her first exposure to jazz was a big band festival in 1971. Since then, she has covered the waterfront of music styles and has traveled the world playing jazz festivals, clubs and events. She has worked with Jimmy Heath, Sahib Shihab, Joel Forrester, Taj Mahal, Diva Big Band, Warren Smith, Joel Forrester, Aretha Franklin, James Brown and many more.
She has 5 Cds released as a leader, and teaches at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s MSJA and the Litchfield Jazz Camp.
