CHRIS STROMQUIST/MATT BAUDER. Drummer Chris Stromquist is a member of Slavic Soul Party and Kultur Shock. He seems to be equally at ease playing Balkan, Afro-Cuban or or Ghanaian music.
Matt Bauder is a saxophonist and composer based who has performed with many iconic figures in avant-garde and rock music including Anthony Braxton Roscoe Mitchell, Iron and Wine and Arcade Fire. His recordings as a leader and co-leader on 482 Music and Clean Feed have received wide critical acclaim.

“Flashing lights. Screaming fans. Prepare to unleash your inner rocker with a workshop led by synth extraordinaire Hans Tammen. You’ll explore waveform synthesis in a small-group setting, make electronic music, and perform onstage with your new bandmates.
The foundation of the class lies in the theory of waveform synthesis, which helps us understand why the analog synth sounds the way it does. In the four classes, we’ll approach each synth Bit from the point of playability. You’ll learn about the endless combinations in the Synth Kit with oscillators, sequencers, keyboards, filters, envelopes, delays, and (my favorite) the random Bit. The course is also practical because we play together and collaborate as a musical group, and can watch how a millimeter here or there makes a huge musical difference.
There are no other prerequisites. The course is geared toward beginners who want to get into electronic music using synthesizers, those who already own a synth but want to know what happens under the hood, and even experienced educators who are interested in exploring the littleBits Synth Kit for their own teaching.
All four classes are mandatory, as each class builds on the information learned in the last.
Taught entirely on the littleBits Synth Kit (created in collaboration with KORG, a pioneer of electronic musical equipment), without using additional equipment or Bits.
The course culminates with a public performance at the littleBits Store on Tuesday, Sept 29th, at 6pm.

An artist with many voices, Jay Gandhi is always loved and appreciated for his meaningful, soulful music. Tonight, he will present a traditional Hindustani classical concert with another brother of the BRM family, Ehren Hanson.
A truly outstanding disciple of the world renowned bansuri maestro, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Jay Gandhi is a Brooklyn-based bansuri performer who is frequently featured at the Brooklyn Raga Massive.
A recipient of the prestigious American Institute of Indian Studies Senior Performing Arts Fellowship, Jay has already been invited to perform across the globe, enthralling audiences in India, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and North America. He currently splits his time between the USA and India and is very active as both a teacher and performer.
Ehren Hanson, a top disciple of Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, has had the honor of accompanying such great musicians as Debi Prasad Chatterjee, Pandit Subrata Roy Chaudhuri, Steve Gorn and others. He lives in Brooklyn and is frequently featured at the Brooklyn Raga Massive. He is also the director of the Anindo Chatterjee School of Tabla.

“One of the most incredible sessions yet! Thanks to all who came out, contributed and supported an amazing evening of music and creativity. The innovative band leader and composer Vijay Iyer came through this week, and alongside Kimberly Thompson and Ben Williams treated us to a 30 minute impromptu throw down which was through the roof. I can’t begin to express what an incredible opportunity moments like these are for some of the younger musicians coming through, so a huge Harlem Sessions thanks to these incredible leaders.
Incredible solos from Noël Simoné Wippler (you can see her with her own band this evening at The Shrine)., Kayla Addison, David Yee , Satish Robertson, Charles Bryant, Jelani Bauman , Jerrick Matthews, Calvin Septa and Addison Frei, Sean Taylor , Tavonna Miller.
We had some great Harlem Sessions debuts too from trumpeter Sean Taylor, trombonist Calvin Septa, Charles Bryant who got down on Bill Wither’s Harlem, and Addison Frei.
Big shout outs to Henry Conerway III, Norman Paul Edwards Jr., C. Kelly Wright, Hymie Rivera, Curtis Graham Nowosad and John Addison and all our other Harlem Session regulars who really make this one of the most rewarding events on our calendar to be part of.
We owe a huge thanks to our Harlem Sessions residents – Charles Turner, Terri Davis, Amani Fela Fela, Russell Carter and Tarus Mateen – the level of work these guys all put in to keep expanding the repertoire is phenomenal, and has really helped our sessions grow into a superb experience.”

John Zorn’s Masada project has resulted in some of the most exciting new Jewish Music of the past century.
Spawning classic modern bands like the Masada Quartet, Bar Kokhba, Electric Masada, the Masada String Trio and cutting edge interpretations by musicians as varied as Joe Lovano, Secret Chiefs 3, Pat Metheny, Cyro Baptista, Erik Friedlander, David Krakauer, Medeski, Martin and Wood, Cracow Klezmer Band and countless others, the music of Masada has become a touchstone for New Jewish music in the 21st century.
In the first decade of Masada (1993-2003) the repertory was focused on Masada Book One. 2004 saw the birth of Masada Book Two—The Book of Angels, which to date has been mined by over 20 different ensembles across 25 cds. With a few plucks of the guembri, surrounded by a squadron of musicians both talented and inspired, Moroccan Aziz Sahmaoui gets everyone going. His second album is a work of maturity that brings together his musical passions, gnawa, rock and fusion – affirming himself as a writer, composer and musical interpreter who must be reckoned with
Everything started in 2010 at the French Kawa bar in Paris. In charge of this 20th arrondissement café is the ex-manager of the Orchestre National de Barbès. The back of the venue houses a tiny stage that he likes to offer to his musician friends; Aziz Sahmaoui, one of the founders of the ONB and faithful acolyte of Joe Zawinul, being one of them. With his accomplice from the Zawinul Syndicate, Alioune Wade, he quickly settles in and tries out melodies that have been buzzing round his head for some time. Rumour soon reaches the ears of other musicians… Among them, Hervé Samb and Cheikh Diallo, Adhil Mirghani. The rumour gets bigger, audience numbers start to grow, people are keen to get sweaty to this new style of music. Soon the common denominator between the Moroccan and the Senegalese is established: the gnawa rhythms and their rustic groove act as a groundwork for some crazy musical experiments by these high-flying instrumentalists. The University of Gnawa is born. It quickly produces its first recording of the same name which is unanimously welcomed by the critics.

It is with an effort that a documentary like this almost appeared out of nowhere. Meaning, this was supposed to be about an international tour of the Philadelphia based rock group Barakka and their experience throughout. The band’s leader, vocalist, and guitarist, Baris Kaya, is originally from Istanbul, Turkey himself. He makes his own songs, which can be categorized as traditional Turkish folk/rock. The group planned its tour last year in May with the hopes of gaining the experience of what it would be like performing in front of a local audience in Hayal Kahvesi , Beyoglu. Instead, unforeseen events took place: a mine explosion in one of the suburban cities that cost hundreds of lives leading to a halt of all live events throughout the nation’s mourning period… and cameras started rolling from another angle: The streets of Istanbul..

Rick Brown and Che Chen play an idiosyncratic take on Mauritania’s music, using homemade percussion and electric guitar. Their music doesn’t strive to any sort of authenticity, yet conjures up the best of African desert music. It is both beautiful and hypnotic and is equally relevant performed in concert form, in a bar, or in an art gallery. Press has been very generous in its praise of the band, but our favorite is still the Paper of Records’ remark that “Rick Brown’s “equipment looked as if it cost no more than a pretty good sandwich.” NY Times.

Live, his power trio is experienced on the floor inside the audience, with contrasted lighting pointing at the band members as they tear through “a wholly fresh fusion of psychedelic sounds and rhythms from around the globe, with nods to free jazz and served with an unabashed punk spirit”. Gat’s unparalleled guitar remains mysterious, wildly inventive and dynamic, taking unexpected psychedelic turns throughout the recordings, backed by Gal Lazer‘s virtuosic hard-hitting African-inspired grooves, and Sergio Sayeg‘s (of Brazilian garage rockers Garotas Suecas) pumping bass.

Braindance is a NYC-based progressive darkwave musical group. Formed in 1992 by electric guitarist – record producer, Vora Vor, and drummer Rob Notoris as a progressive rock band, the group added vocalist Sebastian Elliott later that year. Bassist Eiki Matsumoto and keyboardist Robyn Naylor filled out the lineup.
Combining the elements of goth, industrial, electronic, synthpop and darkwave with progressive metal, progressive trance, vocal house, and modern classical music, Braindance has become one of the most distinctive voices in the underground.

Adventures in Bluesland offer a good time mix of blues, soul, and boogie featuring the original songs of native Texan Phil Gammage (lead vocals, guitar, blues harp) as well as a diverse selection of classic covers. It is not your typical “bar blues band”. The musicians of Adventures in Bluesland have performed with some of the world’s finest artists including David Bowie, Carolina Slim, Amy Winehouse, John Cale, poet John Sinclair, and Tommy Ramone. The band is based in New York and perform at numerous venues throughout the United States.
