China Underground Music Updates: Kraftwerk Banned From Playing Modern Sky’s Strawberry Music Festival In Beijing

An anon employee from Beijing record company let the cat out of the bag this week revealing to local press and AFP that the authorities in Beijing have banned the robotniks for agreeing to play a Tibetan benefit festival in Washington DC in 1998! What’s even more incredible is that Kraftwerk didn’t even play because of very inclement weather.

We thought it was probably time to tell you about other indie labels based in China other than bang on about Metal Postcard the whole time .First up we ought to let you know about Genjing who are Beijing-based record label that specializes in releasing vinyl of Chinese artists.They write on their website. “We aim to promote vinyl and DIY culture in China while creating links between the Chinese scene and DIY scenes around the globe. The bands retain all rights for their works and we aim to serve more as a promotional resource in support of the Chinese DIY community, spreading information about Chinese bands abroad while raising awareness of international DIY scenes within China.”

Hong Kong has long been a backwater for live music. Only a few years back we’d still have to wait months for the latest nostalgia artist to roll into town. In January we’d get Rod the Mod, June The Police and then Coldplay at the end of the year.
But 2013 seems to be the year when it’s all changing and very quickly too.
