God’s Unruly Friends! The new musical event led by master musician Dawoud!

God’s Unruly Friends picks up where Dawoud’s previous ensemble Renegade Sufi left off. Featuring Latif Kurfirst (percussion), Chenana Manno (singing bowls, bass, dance, vocals), and led by Dawoud (exotic string instruments, such as the sitar and dilruba, laptop, vocals), and special guest t.b.a.. They offer music improvised from elements from many musical genres, and translates non musical concepts into musical ideas.

Renegade Sufi is an ensemble led by multi-instrumentalist/composer/improviser Dawoud who has performed and recorded with such artists as Lauryn Hill, James Blood Ulmer, and Nona Hendryx. Renegade Sufi plays a singular blend of sitar-based electronic jazz. The group expands upon classical raga with otherworldly electronics, hypnotic drum loops, and free-jazz-style improvisation to produce deep, trancelike grooves. Dawoud from the midwest, USA, yet a Muslim-Sufi somehow steeped in the mysticism of the Far East, carrying the Ravi Shankar/George Harrison banner into the next generation.

Documentary film about Omar Khayyam: “Intoxicating Rhymes & Sobering Wine”

About the film and Khayyam

This educational documentary, which is directed by the Iranian film maker and photographer Majeed Beenteha,
is about the life and times of Omar Khayyam, the famed 11th-century Persian mathematician and astronomer. It  reexamines Khayyam’s life, work and poetry, and attempts to identify the reasons behind our intellectual preoccupation with his poetry and message.
